Doorsteps on Lisburn Road - how many lads can you count?

Food: You have to choose your words carefully when describing the sandwich establishment that is Doorsteps in Belfast. 'Epicness', 'immense', 'legend' all spring to mind, and there's a certain syntax used when stringing these words together. Simply put, three guys talking about Doorsteps would sound like this:

Guy #1: 'Bout ye? Fancy wee Doorstepsy sandwich?
Guy #2: Wee Doorstepsy after gym would be immense, like.
Guy #3: Legend.
Passerby: Banter lads. Banter!

If you visit Belfast, you simply have to pay a visit to Doorsteps. The sandwiches are about as good as two pieces of bread plus filling can get outside of Philly. In fact the only problem is figuring out just what you're going to get. The choice is pretty much 'wow!' But don't get too ambitious - these sandwiches are BIG...

Belfast 8th July 2010

Both stores close early afternoon and there are often queues so make it there in time. Doorsteps is a well worthy trip and everyone I've ever taken truly did think it was 'epic'.

Tip: if you want to chat to the locals conversation starters might be how epic your scrum session was earlier on or what you bench. If you're a girl, conversation starters might be 'How was your scrum session earlier?' or 'What do you bench?'

Price: Sandwich + drink around £5 (sit-in)

English Glen's Glaswegian Life #1

Michael's picture

Your reaction to this statement might be a bit like when the townspeople of St Petersburg, MO found out Huckleberry Finn was still alive: shocked but yet not that surprised. This blog is a crossover between the blogs '...Days Until Mikey Gets to Leave St Andrews' and 'This Glasgwegian Life' starring... English Glen. Yes, he's back ladies!

For those of you don't know, English Glen lives in Glasgow now. He naturally hates it. The daily vitriol he spouts about the place is not helped by the fact he works in Somerfield. Or Coop. Or wherever it is that he works. It's in Glasgow so it's probably pretty shit. The following happened to our protagonist today:

"Haw Glen, dyu know any Madonna albumms?"

"Um, sure, why?"

"Like whit"

"Well she had her self titled first album, then Like A Virgin, then I think it was True Blue before she brought out the Immaculate Collec..."

"Hhahahahaha if you know any Madonna albums yir gay! hahahahaha"

NZ: KFC, a review

Philip's picture

It might have been the worst KFC meal I have ever had. It certainly is the worst KFC meal that I can remember. KFC, Great King Street North, Dunedin, NZ served up vastly over-seasoned fries and chicken that was so bland that it made me wonder if perhaps the Kiwis are only privy to four of the Colonel's eleven secret herbs and spices.

Adding insult to injury, there wasn't a single wet wipe in sight (are Northern Irish KFCs the only ones who care about tradition?) And perhaps the single most depressing thing about the Kiwi KFC experience - no buckets.

NZ: Hello from New Zealand (I'm in a library)

Philip's picture

Sorry but I haven't taken any pictures yet so you'll just have to settle for this one.

There's something a bit surreal about what I've seen of New Zealand so far, i.e. Auckland Airport, Wellington Airport and Dunedin. Boxy cars, tacky decor, brand logos that would hurt Burr's very soul, privately owned video rental shops, petrol pumps from the '70s, 15" CRT airport TV screens, and a general feeling of being transported about 15 years into the past.

"And when the oxygen masks fall out in front of you, don't stop to ask why or see if you can get one in another colour... (LOLZ)"

- Quote for quote from the Air New Zealand safety video.

My initial feeling of Dunedin is that it is very reminiscent of small town America. One thing I have to say before I go... I have never in my life seen the star fields of our Milky Way until last night.

Dmitri's

Location: Campfield Arcade, Deansgate (Manchester city centre)

Manchester 30th April 2010 Manchester 30th April 2010

Left: Dmitri's from Deansgate. Right: Whitebait starter

Food: When it comes to scran of the Greek variety Dmitri's on Deansgate is a Mancunian institution. Hummus, freshly baked pittas, chargrilled lamb, seafood, feta, olives, Ouzo... Woopah! As for the general ambience? If this were Johnny Banana's blog the phrase 'chilled out' would be used several times, with the choice of eating either in the bar area with the rowdy proles or out back in the covered arcade dotted with patio heaters. This part of the restaurant is particularly swell. Chuck Klosterman once asked, 'If you had to choose between an acquaintance being attacked by a bear, not knowing how bad the injuries would be, and it raining wherever you are for the rest of your life - what would you choose?' If you're in Manchester you've already chosen the latter. Rivaled only by the damp purgatory that is Glasgow, the opportunity to eat 'outside' without getting wet (or cold) is one of my favourite aspects of Dmitri's - along with their moreish sides!
Dmitri's is a solid choice with good food if you're in the city centre. There may be better places to eat but it definitely has something everyone will enjoy (including chick'n!)

Price: Starters around £6; Mains from £8-15; Desserts around £5.
