Five Towns: Pisa

Michael's picture

He's back! The Mango's most controversial travel blogger made the 240km trip up into Tuscany today, not to Florence but to its nearby chum... Can you guess where?

Pisa 27th July 2010

So Pisa and that... Once again, pretty beautiful - it's difficult to say anything about this place without it sounding trite or a little cliché. RB's first response to 'the Tower' was, 'Is that it?' What else... Oh yeah, apparently Pisans (pronounced 'Pie-zan' like the in the Sopranos) love to photocopy. Just love it. Photocopying shacks everywhere. Oh, and the journey! Toilets on Italian trains just empty onto the tracks. RB nodded and informed me Vietnam uses the same system. The Romans invented plumbing but 2000 years later they're dumping straight onto train tracks. Oh maron!

On the menu today? Thus far it's been some chickpea torta, a slice of tomato pie and a Coca-Cola. We'll see what tonight brings. Hopefully a few more Italian babes for me and Totoro. And I goddamn hope they have some fish... Baccalà!

NZ: Of Penguins and Sheep

Philip's picture

The Otago Peninsula is yet another stunning location on the South Island. Is it embarrassing that I thought that all penguins lived in Antarctica?

There were dozens of these little guys returning onto the shore to join their sheep buddies.

The yellow-eyed penguins are really neat guys. You're probably aware of how much I love penguins. I love the way the way they walk. Look how close I got to this guy!

He's been standing like that for at least 15 minutes now. Apparently it's because he needs to cool off and this is without having to wear four layers, a buff and a hat.
And here are two seals kissing, just because.

Five Towns: Roma

Michael's picture

Totoro's tour of Italia has started. This will have to be a fairly succinct description of his time in Roma. Fortunately, like Tobey Ziegler, he also likes lists. What has our little neighbour learnt so far...

Rome 25th July 2010

  • Baggage reclaim in Italy sucks.
  • Italians tend to be fairly... brusque?

Rome 25th July 2010

  • Food in Italia is incredible but plays havoc with the bowels - and not an acorn in sight for our little neighbour!

Rome 25th July 2010

  • ...leading on to the next dilemma. Toilets in Italy are the worst. Well, in Rome they are. More on this to follow.
  • Lastly, despite the queues (or lack thereof), the heat, the moneys problems, Rome really is quite beautiful.

NZ: Here's to Milo

Philip's picture

Often I think the only thing keeping me sane during this extended stint in the south island is Milo. It's there for me when I need it most - half way through a long Geris ward round* or on a cold, lonely Dunedin evening. From the first boiling hot sip to the smokey swirls of the saturate that appear when you approach your last half dozen gulps, each cup of Milo is something to be savoured.

It takes around 4 minutes for me to drink a mug of Milo. I know this because the best way to enjoy a Milo is whilst watching season 8 of 24 (As John Russell once said: "Bauer's gone loco"). There is nothing I look forward to more after an eight-to-five day than a post-prandial Milo, a few Super Wines and an episode of 24.

Nestle suggests you make your Milo with hot milk, but here are the two ways I take it:

1. Neat

- 4 heaped tsp Milo
- Boiling water

2. Irish

- 4 heaped tsp Milo
- 1/2 tsp instant coffee
- 1/4 tsp sugar
- Boiling water

So here's to Milo. Cheers.

* Free Milo at my beloved Ward 6B.

Moonlight

Location: 75 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme (Curry Mile)

Manchester 22nd July 2010 Manchester 22nd July 2010

Food: Welcome to... Asia Town! The Curry Mile is a pretty odd place if you're from Scotland or Northern Ireland. It boasts a multitude of gaudy curry houses, tacky jewellers and Asian supermarkets, the smell of garam masala wafting through Wilmslow road and all its tributaries. But despite the kitsch, the pickpockets, the Lamborghinis and Ferraris that cruise up streets heaving with vagrants, not to mention the indisputable money laundering that must occur here, Rusholme has a few gems worth visiting. At the top of the list is Moonlight, which serves up ice-cream and treats all hours of the day and night, perpetually crammed with customers gabbling away in Hindi and Urdu. Favourites include baklava, coconut ice-cream, chocolate cake or milkshakes. My recommendation? Asia up your milkshake and get a vanilla faluda - a swarming feast of sweet vermicelli, vanilla ice-cream and what staff will tell you are 'fish eyes'!

[ Missing faluda photo! ]

Faluda in the ghetto - not for the faint-hearted.

Price: Milkshakes / Faluda £2.50; Large cones £2.00; Baklava 50p.

Website: Moonlight don't need a website when they have word of mouth.
